Hidden in the precincts of a quiet Pure Land temple in Tsushima, Aichi, the Hosenji Shoin (former Hattori Family Residence Shoin) is a refined sukiya-style shoin originally built around the 1890s for a wealthy fertilizer merchant and donated to the temple in 1930. A National Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, it preserves the elegant tokonoma alcove, paulownia transoms, polished round timbers, and a small tea room with shitaji-mado windows that defined refined Meiji-era town-merchant architecture. A perfect addition to a heritage walk that includes Tsushima Shrine and the Hotta Family Residence.
