The Front Warehouse of the Former Yamashige Store
The Front Warehouse is a single-storey timber building of about 133 square metres, with an iron-sheet gabled roof and a ridge running some 18 metres deep. Built in the early Shōwa period, between roughly 1926 and 1945, it was raised to store ceramics as the Yamashige trade expanded. It stands parallel to and just north of the New Shed, part of the working rank of storehouses along the slope above the north bank of the Seto River.
The Yamashige Store was a ceramics wholesaler (tōjiki oroshidonya) in the Kitashintani district of Seto, built up by the Kato family from the 1880s. As the firm grew, it added warehouse after warehouse to hold the wares it gathered and shipped. The owner's main house is gone, but the Front Warehouse and eight other buildings survive, all entered on the national register together in 2015. Seto City owns the property today.
Why It Was Registered
The building is, above all, a clear-span storeroom. Its roof is carried on a large king-post truss (wagoya), a triangular timber frame that lets the long depth of the warehouse stand open, with no columns down the middle to break the floor. For a wholesaler moving quantities of fragile ceramics, an unobstructed floor was the whole point: room to stack, sort, and shift crates without working around posts.
The Front Warehouse belongs to the phase of growth that followed the firm's establishment, when the Yamashige Store enlarged its premises to handle a rising volume of trade. Registered Tangible Cultural Properties are listed for their part in the historic landscape rather than designated like Important Cultural Properties and National Treasures; the warehouse was registered on 17 November 2015 (registration number 23-0439).
What to Look For
Look up at the roof structure. The king-post truss is the reason the interior reads as one long open volume; following the line of the tie beams and the post that rises to the ridge shows how the load is gathered and carried to the side walls, leaving the floor clear beneath.
Then place the building among its neighbours. The Front Warehouse runs parallel to the New Shed just to its south, and the two belong to a row of storehouses that step along the slope. Read together, they show how a working ceramics wholesaler organised its yard: residence and office on one side, and on the other a rank of warehouses sized and framed for storing and moving stock.
