The Detached Residence of the Former Yamashige Store
The Detached Residence (Hanare) is the oldest of the nine surviving Yamashige buildings, built in 1889, and the one with the richest human history. It belonged to the founding Kato family as their annex, and according to the records of the trading house it served as lodging for distinguished guests, including members of the imperial family, when they visited Seto. A two-storey timber building of about 133 square metres with a tiled hipped roof, it sits on the slope above the north bank of the Seto River and gives the street below its weight and character.
The Yamashige Store was a ceramics wholesaler (tōjiki oroshidonya) in the Kitashintani district of Seto, built up by the Kato family from the 1880s. The founder, Kato Shigetarō, set the firm on its way in that decade, and the Detached Residence and the perimeter wall were among the first structures raised on the site. The owner's main house is gone, but this annex and eight other buildings survive, all entered on the national register together in 2015. Seto City owns the property today.
Why It Was Registered
The plan is that of a fine residence rather than a workplace. On the ground floor, the eastern part is an earthen-floored entry, while four rooms to the west are arranged in the den-no-ji pattern, a four-square grid named for the shape of the character for "rice field." The northwest room is the principal guest room, and there are further rooms upstairs. This is space made for receiving people of standing.
Local histories record that the annex hosted visiting dignitaries when they came to Seto, among them Prince Nashimoto Morimasa in 1911 and Prince Yi U in 1927. The black plaster of the south wall is the building's signature, a dark, dignified surface that anchors the streetscape on the north bank. Registered Tangible Cultural Properties are listed for their part in the historic landscape rather than designated like Important Cultural Properties and National Treasures; the Detached Residence was registered first among the Yamashige buildings on 17 November 2015 (registration number 23-0434).
What to Look For
The south face is where to begin. Its black plaster, paired with the perimeter wall in front of it, gives the lane a grave, composed frontage that sets the tone for the whole site. Few buildings in town present so dark and deliberate a wall to the street.
Picture the annex in use. A guest arriving through the earthen entry, the four-square rooms beyond, the principal room in the northwest reserved for the most honoured visitor, the upstairs rooms held in reserve: the layout was built around hospitality. Because the main house to which the family's life centred has been lost, the Detached Residence now carries much of the memory of the household itself, beyond the business it served.
