The Perimeter Wall of the Former Yamashige Store
The Perimeter Wall runs along the front of the Yamashige property for about 28 metres, set on a stone base and capped with a tiled roof. Built in the middle Meiji period, between roughly 1883 and 1897, it is among the earliest structures on the site and was raised together with the Detached Residence behind it. Wall and residence work as a pair, and together they give the lane on the north bank of the Seto River its composed, dignified frontage.
The Yamashige Store was a ceramics wholesaler (tōjiki oroshidonya) in the Kitashintani district of Seto, built up by the Kato family from the 1880s. The wall enclosed the grounds where the family lived and ran the trade. The owner's main house is gone, but the wall and eight other buildings survive, all entered on the national register together in 2015. Seto City owns the property today.
Why It Was Registered
The wall is built with real care, especially where it faces the street. Its base is dry-laid granite. Along the southern front the stones are set in a four-course tortoiseshell pattern (kikkō-zumi), hexagonal faces fitted tightly together, finished along the top with a course of dressed coping stones. Elsewhere the base uses a valley-laid pattern (tanizumi). This is masonry meant to be seen.
Above the stone, the wall is built in two registers. The lower part is faced on the outside with vertical boards left with an adze-cut texture (naguri), and lined on the inside with woven cedar lattice (sugi-ajiro); the upper part is finished in black plaster to match the residence behind it. Registered Tangible Cultural Properties are listed for their part in the historic landscape rather than designated like Important Cultural Properties and National Treasures; the wall was registered on 17 November 2015 (registration number 23-0442).
What to Look For
Start at the southern front, where the granite is laid in the tortoiseshell pattern. Four courses of tightly fitted hexagonal stones, topped by the long coping stones, make a base that is as much display as foundation. The wall keeps its best stonework for the face it shows the street.
Then read the wall upward. The adze-cut boards of the lower register catch the light along their worked surface, while the black plaster above carries the same dark finish as the south wall of the Detached Residence rising behind. Seen together, wall and residence form a single dark, deliberate frontage. The wall is not a backdrop to the site but one of its defining street-facing elements.
