The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a timber structure with a tiled roof and an area of 13 square metres.

Why It Was Registered

The Manpukuji Temple Bell Tower was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. According to the Agency, it stands on a cut-stone base in the southeast of the grounds: an open belfry 1 ken square with a hip-and-gable tiled roof running north to south. Inward-leaning round posts on stone bases are tied with penetrating beams, the bracketing on the top plate is closely packed projecting brackets with fist-shaped ends, and the eaves have fan-shaped double rafters.

The Agency describes it as a richly decorated belfry in the Zen style that contributes to the landscape of the grounds.
