Manpukuji Temple Main Hall
The Manpukuji Temple Main Hall (萬福寺本堂) is a structure of 1899 at Manpukuji in Kamishigehara-cho, Chiryu City, Aichi Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 17, 2015, under registration number 23-0449. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 603 square metres, renovated in 2014. The Chiryu Tourism Association describes it as a large hall 13 ken wide whose framework was raised in 1896.
Why It Was Registered
The Manpukuji Temple Main Hall was registered as a model of design. According to the Agency, it is a large hall with a standard Shin plan, facing east at the centre of the grounds with a 3 ken porch. The inner sanctuary and side chambers have coved fine-coffered ceilings, the sanctuary coved twice over, and the fenced area and outer sanctuary have fine-coffered ceilings.
The Agency regards it as a work from the prime of Onoda Matazo, a master carpenter active in western Mikawa in the Meiji period, grand in scale and splendid in design. The Chiryu Tourism Association likewise calls it the representative work of Onoda Matazo of Miyoshi.
What to Look For
Look at the ceilings: the twice-coved coffered ceiling over the inner sanctuary gives the heart of the Shin hall its dignity (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Note too the sheer size of the hall, 603 square metres, and its 3 ken porch.
