What the Yamamo Miso and Soy Sauce Brewery Shop and Main House Is
The Yamamo Miso and Soy Sauce Brewery Shop and Main House (ヤマモ味噌醤油醸造元店舗兼主屋, Tenpo-ken-omoya) is a combined shop and family home built between 1883 and 1897, in the middle Meiji era, facing south onto the old Ushu Kaido highway in Iwasaki, Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture; it became Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 3 December 2024. It is a timber building, mostly single-storey with a 2nd storey over part of it, roofed in sheet metal, with a building area of 203 square metres. Of the brewery's eight listed buildings, it is the only one that is both shop and dwelling.
The building stacks two jobs front to back. The part on the street is the shop. From its northeast corner the family quarters run back into the plot: a Buddhist altar room and a Zashiki reception room with a wide veranda, each set slightly askew from the last. Rooms stepped diagonally in this way, rather than lined up in a row, are described in Japanese as ganko, after the staggered formation of flying geese. Trade at the front, family at the back: the basic plan of a highway merchant house.
It was altered in the middle Showa years and renovated again in 2016, the same year the brewery began showing visitors around its storehouses.
Why It Was Listed
The Yamamo Miso and Soy Sauce Brewery Shop and Main House was listed for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the gable wall that faces the street, where the roof runs out deep beyond the wall and the timber framing is left exposed, as giving the highway its character.
The shop section is a two-storey building with a Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof, entered from the gable end, Tsumairi, and wrapped on the front and side by lean-to roofs called Geya. Upstairs is a street-facing reception room: guests were received above the counter. Yuzawa City points out that the traditional Wagoya roof frame can be read in the front gable.
Among the eight, this building has a different role. The storehouses and workshop carry out the brewing; the shop-house stands on the boundary between highway and property and has served as the brewery's public face. That position, and the look of the building in it, is what the listing recognises.
What to Look For
Start with the front gable. The roof ends project well beyond the wall, and beneath them the beams and struts sit on the face of the building. The overhang at a gable end is called keraba; the deeper it is, the better the wall is sheltered from rain and snow and the darker the shadow it throws. In snowbound Yuzawa it is easy to see, standing in front of this wall, why builders were generous with the roof.
Then follow the lean-to roofs across the front and down the side. A single-storey skirt of roof wraps the foot of the two-storey block and spreads its outline low and wide, with the windows of the upstairs reception room sitting above. Business downstairs, hospitality upstairs: the split is legible from the street.
Keep the depth of the Yamamo Miso and Soy Sauce Brewery Shop and Main House in mind as well. Because the altar room and reception room step back from the northeast corner of the shop, the gable you see from the road is only part of the house. Behind it, the Heisuke Storehouse continues under one protective covering that runs back from the main house.
Visiting
The exterior of the Yamamo Miso and Soy Sauce Brewery Shop and Main House can be seen from the old Ushu Kaido. To read the framing in the gable, stand on the far side of the road where the whole front wall fits into view. With so deep an overhang, the shadow on the gable is strongest around midday on a clear day, which makes the beam lines easiest to follow.
The altar room and reception room at the back are part of a private home, and no public opening has been announced (checked 25 September 2026). The brewery's shop and café can be visited without booking, while the factory tour of the storehouses requires a reservation.
