A Sake Merchant's Office Dressed for the Street
Umebijin Sake Brewery Office (梅美人酒造事務所, Umebijin Shuzō Jimusho) is a two-storey timber building of 1931 at 1557-2 Yawatahama City, Ehime Prefecture, entered on Japan's national register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2004. It measures 8 by 5 ken in plan, a building area of 142 square metres, and turns its long north-south body east to face the old highway.
Tile covers the front and the flanking side. Below it runs a band of granite laid rusticated, the split faces left rough. Sash windows sit between pilaster strips, and a parapet carries the top edge back as far as the rear end of the building. Seen from the road, this reads as a Western commercial block with no roof at all.
The roof is in fact a hipped one, Yosemune-zukuri, covered in Sangawara-buki pantiles. Walk into the yard and the pitched tile planes come into view behind the parapet. Umebijin Sake Brewery Office holds both conventions in a single structure, one facing the public and one facing the works.
Registered as a Model of Design
Japan's registration system records a reason for each entry. For this building the reason given is that it serves as a standard of design. The three other registered structures on the same compound, the brewing house, the boiler room with its chimney, and the residence main house, were all listed instead for contributing to the historic landscape of the country. Umebijin Sake Brewery Office is the only one of the four selected on the strength of its architecture as such.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as evidence of how the shop-office of a sake brewer took on Western dress. A brewing hall answers to fermentation, a dwelling to family life. An office answers to customers and merchants, and the material choices follow from that.
Registration took effect on 2 March 2004 and was gazetted on 29 March of the same year, under number 38-0053. The entry covers 1 building.
What to Look For
Start at the base. Rustication of this kind was a deliberate roughness: the mason left the split face of the granite exposed rather than dressing it smooth, so the wall changes texture sharply where the stone meets the glazed tile above. Stone and fired clay, two different hardnesses, meet on the same plane.
Then the windows. Sash windows that slide vertically were an imported form, and here they fall at even intervals between the vertical rhythm of the pilasters.
Then the parapet, which does not wrap the whole building. It runs to the rear end and stops. Someone decided in advance exactly how far the costume needed to go.
One caution about dates. Ehime Prefecture's official tourism site gives the completion year as 1933. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database records 1931. This article follows the national database as the primary record.
The other three registered buildings stand deeper in the yard: the boiler room and chimney to the west, the brewing house north of that, the residence to the southwest. The office sits closest to the road, at the head of the arrangement.
Visiting
Umebijin Sake Brewery Office is private property and a working office. Ehime Prefecture's tourism site states that visits are free but must be booked by the day before, that the premises operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and that Sunday is a closed day. A paid tour with a souvenir is also listed at 3,000 yen, by reservation only and offered seasonally.
The Yawatahama City Furusato Tourism Corporation runs a brewery experience led by the company president: 2,640 yen per person, about 1 hour, offered May through November but not during the brewing season from December to April, for groups of 2 to 10, with bookings normally due 2 weeks ahead. Because published prices differ between sources, confirm directly by telephone on 0894-22-0312.
