About the Sakai Family Residence Household Goods Storehouse

The Sakai Family Residence Household Goods Storehouse (酒井家住宅家財蔵, Sakai-ke Jūtaku Kazaigura) is a 2-storey earthen-walled Dozo-zukuri storehouse built around 1930 in Rakuma, Maruoka-cho, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2025.

The Household Goods Storehouse stands just north of the main house and was used to keep the family's furnishings and other possessions. Its building area is 61 m². With the north storehouse beside it to the west, it forms the northwest corner of the estate.

A Storehouse Built to Be Secure

The Sakai Family Residence Household Goods Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a strongly guarded storehouse, with iron doors hung at its entrance and windows.

Its place right behind the main house made it convenient for things taken in and out often. Sealing every opening with iron suggests how much the contents were worth to the household.

Iron Doors, Weatherboards and a Central Post

The storehouse has a 2-storey Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof in Sangawara-buki pantiles. Its door is on the south side, sheltered by a lean-to Geya that forms a Kuramae, a covered work space in front of the storehouse where goods could be handled in rain or snow.

The walls are finished in white Shikkui plaster, with oshibuchi weatherboarding (horizontal boards held by thin vertical battens) carried high up the walls to protect the plaster.

Inside, each floor is a single board-floored room. A free-standing post rises in the middle of the upper floor, and the roof is carried on a rafter-based structure.

Iron doors close both the entrance and the windows. Thick earthen walls plus iron shutters at every opening are what define this building.
