About the Sakai Family Residence West Storehouse

The Sakai Family Residence West Storehouse (酒井家住宅西土蔵, Sakai-ke Jūtaku Nishi-dozō) is a 2-storey earthen-walled Dozo-zukuri storehouse built around 1930 in Rakuma, Maruoka-cho, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2025.

The West Storehouse stands southwest of the main house and was used for rice, farm tools and the like. At 28 m² it is the smallest of the estate's storehouses, but it holds the southwest corner of the plot.

Closing the Southwest Corner

The Sakai Family Residence West Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that, with the family crest on its west gable, it gives the southwest corner of the estate its look.

The south wall, which runs west from the south gate, ends against this storehouse, so wall and building together close off the corner.

Plaster Walls with a Hachimaki Band

The storehouse has a 2-storey Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof in Sangawara-buki pantiles. Unlike the household goods and north storehouses, whose doors face south, its door opens to the east, toward the main house, under a small Hisashi canopy.

The walls are finished in Shikkui plaster, and a Hachimaki band, a thickened strip of plaster wrapped round just below the eaves, tightens the line of the roof edge. Sasarako weatherboarding is carried high up the lower walls.

Inside, each floor is a single room, and the roof is framed with Nobori-bari rising beams. As on the north storehouse, the family crest is set on the west gable.
