What is the Ryotei Masa Main House?
The Ryotei Masa Main House (料亭満佐主屋棟, Ryōtei Masa Shuokutō) is a two-story timber dining building erected in 1954 on the grounds of the Ryotei Masa restaurant in Nakasu 1-chome, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on September 10, 2019.
With a building area of 236 square meters it is the largest of the five registered structures at Ryotei Masa. It faces west toward the Naka River, with the kitchen wing joined to its back and the new wing reached by a corridor to the east. The entrance where guests are received and the large banquet hall are both in this building. Its registration number is 40-0159.
Why the Masa main house was registered
The Ryotei Masa Main House was registered as a model of design, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs sums it up as a ryotei building of fine quality in the new sukiya manner.
The plan carries much of that judgment. There are three guest rooms on the ground floor and a large hall upstairs, and a central corridor runs through each floor so that every room can be reached without passing through another. A ryotei seats each party in a room of its own, so a corridor that keeps the rooms apart is exactly what the business needs. The Agency also points out that each room is finished to a different design. Instead of a row of identical tatami rooms, ceilings and alcoves change from room to room, which gives guests a reason to ask for one room over another.
According to the restaurant, the upstairs hall holds about 40 people and is the largest room in the house, used for banquets. It also names rooms such as the Pine Room, with a boat-bottom ceiling, and the Paulownia Room, but no public record says which building or floor each of these is in.
Clay walls and a gable-end front at the Masa main house
The roof of the Ryotei Masa Main House combines Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable and Kirizuma-zukuri gabled forms under Sangawara-buki pantiles, and the building turns its gable end to the front, the arrangement called Tsumairi. The entrance projects at the north end of the front, and guests step up here after passing through the front gate.
The outer walls are Ōkabe, with the posts plastered over and the surface finished in jūraku clay plaster. Because the posts disappear into the wall, the facade reads as one continuous plane of earth plaster rather than the grid of timber and clay of older sukiya buildings. That quiet mass is the new sukiya look, and a Fukuoka city magazine singled out these clay walls when it featured Ryotei Masa.
Seeing the Ryotei Masa Main House
The Ryotei Masa Main House is the dining building of a restaurant still in business, and it has no public opening days. Only guests who have booked a meal can enter the ground-floor rooms or the upstairs hall.
From the street you can see the wall and the front gate, but the wall hides almost all of the clay facade of the Ryotei Masa Main House. The projecting entrance and gable-end front are seen properly only by guests shown in through the gate. There is no official guidance on photography, so even when dining, check with the staff before taking pictures and keep other parties' rooms out of the frame.
