An Inner Gate Screening the Garden

The Imao Family Residence Inner Gate and Wall (今尾家住宅中門及び塀) is the inner gate and wall of the Imao family estate in Naka-Shinkano-cho, Kakamigahara City, Gifu Prefecture, from the Taisho period, which in 2007 were registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a tiled timber gate 1.2 metres wide and a tiled timber wall 14 metres long; they were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape.

The Agency explains that they divide the detached house and garden from the area south of the main house.

Structure

According to the Agency, the gate is a pantiled bracket-arm gate with double panelled doors inset with small bamboo at the top.

The wall is ochre-coloured plaster above and washed artificial stone below, with decorative lattice windows every bay, and a pantiled coping.

What to Look For

The Agency calls it an important element of the estate. According to the entry for the detached house, the gate bears a plaque reading Meichikukyo and forms a charming scene with the garden to the east.
