A Tiny Bridge That Marked a Change in Material
Most of the Nagara River Power Station is a story told in brick. This short bridge is the exception. Spanning the spillway beside the station's head tank, the small structure known as the Spillway Crossing Bridge was built around 1910 not in brick but in reinforced concrete, and it counts among the earliest reinforced-concrete bridges in the Chubu region. It is only eight point two metres long and two metres wide, a service crossing rather than a public thoroughfare, yet its material puts it at the front of a technological shift.
Its setting explains its job. Before the water drops to the turbines it gathers in a tank, and the spillway carries off any excess so the tank does not overflow. The bridge lets staff cross that spillway. It is a single-arch design, and its builders gave the arch a slightly varying cross-section rather than a uniform one, a small refinement in a functional object.
Why an Early Concrete Bridge Matters
In 1910 reinforced concrete was still a young technology in Japan. The brick aqueducts elsewhere along this same waterway represent the established craft of the Meiji era; this little bridge points toward what would come next. Being among the region's first of its kind is what earns it attention, and it was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2001, protected as part of the wider power station complex.
The plant it belongs to was a landmark in its own right. The Nagara River Power Station started generating in March 1910, built by the Nagoya Electric Light Company as its first plant and ranked among the largest hydroelectric stations in the country. The project traced back to Kobayashi Shigemasa, whose earlier venture had failed in the recession of the late 1890s, and was carried through with German turbines and generators. Handed to Chubu Electric Power in 1951, the station still runs, and the survival of small components like this bridge lets the complex be read as a complete piece of early modern engineering.
A Detail Worth Knowing Before You Go
The bridge rewards knowledge more than a photograph. Standing next to the brick structures it seems plain, but that plainness is the point: a smooth concrete arch where the rest of the site speaks in patterned brick, an early example of a material that would soon dominate bridge-building everywhere. The slight variation in the arch section shows that even here, in a utility crossing at the head tank, the design received some thought.
As with the other waterway structures, this is working equipment, not a visitor site. The bridge sits within the operating power station and is not laid out for public access. Anyone drawn to the plant's history should begin at the red-brick main building in Tachibana, where the exterior and the retired original German turbine are on view. From there the story of the site, brick and concrete alike, comes into focus.
