A Curving Brick Aqueduct Near the End of the Line
Before the Nagara River reaches the turbines at Mino, its diverted water travels almost five kilometres through a chain of tunnels, covered channels and open cuts. Close to the point where that conduit finishes its run stands the Hidani Aqueduct Bridge, a five-arch span of brick and concrete built in 1910 to carry the water itself across a valley. The bridge measures fifty-four metres long and eight metres wide, and unlike an ordinary road viaduct it holds a river on its back.
What sets it apart is the curve. The deck follows a bent alignment in plan rather than a straight line, and the arches beneath come in two different span lengths to suit the terrain. On top runs the water channel, three point four metres deep, its outer face laid in English bond, the alternating courses of headers and stretchers that give Meiji brickwork its distinctive banded look.
Why a Water Bridge Earned Cultural Property Status
The Hidani bridge belongs to a larger achievement. The whole Nagara River Power Station was completed in March 1910 by the Nagoya Electric Light Company, the firm's first generating plant, and it was recognised as one of the largest hydroelectric stations in the country at the time. A run-of-river design needs no dam, but it does need a long, carefully graded waterway to deliver its flow, and the aqueduct bridges are the parts of that waterway forced to leap across gullies.
The origins reach back to Kobayashi Shigemasa, a former domain retainer whose early plan to harness the Nagara collapsed in the post-war slump of the late 1890s. Revived through the engineer Noguchi Shitagau and taken up by Nagoya Electric Light, the scheme was finished with imported German turbines that had to be dragged by ox-cart and floated in on rafts. The bridge was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2001, one of several structures along the conduit given that protection, and the station as a whole was later named a Modernisation Industrial Heritage site.
Reading the Structure on the Ground
Approach the bridge and the engineering logic becomes legible. The two span lengths are not a mistake but a response to the valley floor, and the segmental arches sit low and wide, built to carry weight rather than to impress. The brick facing was chosen partly for looks; a working aqueduct could have been plain concrete, yet the builders dressed its visible surface in patterned brick that has weathered to a deep, mottled red.
A word of realism for visitors. This is live infrastructure, water still moves through the channel above, and the bridge sits along the conduit route rather than in a public park. The most reliable place to meet the power station up close remains its red-brick main building in Tachibana, where the exterior and an outdoor display of the original German turbine are open to view. Treat the aqueducts as rewarding finds for those willing to follow the waterway, not as staffed attractions.
