A 60-mat hall at the east end
The Tomioka City Social Education Center Auditorium Building (富岡市社会教育館講堂棟) is a single-storey timber assembly hall in Ichinomiya, Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture, completed in 1936 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on July 8, 2008. It was the gathering and lecture space of the Tōgoku Keishin Dōjō, a training hall funded by Gunma residents after Emperor Showa's 1934 visit to Nukisaki Shrine.
Facing south, it covers 314 square metres, the largest footprint of the five registered structures. The roof is a hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) form entered from the gable end, laid with Sangawara-buki pantiles and edged in sheet iron at the eaves.
At its heart is a hall of 60 tatami mats. Broad veranda corridors wrap its front and sides, a lecture platform stands at the back, and behind the platform a former shrine room projects from the building. A covered passage on the west side links the auditorium to the rest of the staggered complex.
A lecture hall with a shrine at its back
The plan of the Tomioka City Social Education Center Auditorium Building spells out why the complex was built. The Tōgoku Keishin Dōjō was designed for the spiritual training of young people under the banner of reverence for the gods and ancestors. Setting a shrine directly behind the lecture platform put instruction and worship on one axis.
After the war the institution changed its name and purpose, and the hall became a venue for adult education classes and events. The shrine room survives at the rear as the "former shrine," one of the few physical clues to what the building was first used for.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs praises the south front, where a large hip-and-gable end rises behind a smaller gabled entrance porch (Kirizuma-zukuri), giving the facade real dignity. Layering the two roof forms front to back was also a practical way of wrapping a large volume in a Japanese-style exterior.
The design came from the Oe Kokufu Kenchikujuku, the studio led by the architect Oe Shintaro. Of the five structures registered on the same day, the Auditorium Building best conveys the scale and formality of the whole complex.
Reading the layered gables
The Tomioka City Social Education Center Auditorium Building stands at the eastern end of the complex, and its south front is the view to come for. Step back and face it squarely: the gabled porch sits in front, and the much larger triangle of the hip-and-gable end rises behind it, two layers of roof stacked one over the other.
Walk slowly toward the entrance and watch the relationship change. The porch roof gradually fills your view until the big gable behind it disappears.
At the eaves, a line of sheet iron edges the tiles. It is the same finish used on all five registered structures; compare it with the entrance building and the main gate to see how one detail reads on roofs of very different sizes.
If the hall is open, look down its length from the side corridor. The sequence of hall, platform and former shrine is much clearer from inside than from outside.
Visiting
The exterior of the Tomioka City Social Education Center Auditorium Building can be viewed from the grounds at any time during opening hours, and there is no charge.
The hall is still used for meetings and events; Gunma Prefecture's convention guide lists it as a multipurpose room for up to 100 people. When it is booked you may not be able to go in, so if seeing the interior matters, call the center (0274-62-2033) ahead of your visit.
