A Striped Gate of Brick and Stone

The Former Saba Water Purification Plant Gate (福山市旧佐波浄水場門) is the gate of a waterworks of 1925 in Sabacho, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on March 29, 2013 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a gate of stone and brick, 3.9 metres wide; registration number 34-0135.

Main Posts and a Side Gate

The Former Saba Water Purification Plant Gate opens toward the north end of the plant's east side (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Two posts 2.4 metres high, set 2.8 metres apart, form the main gate, and to the south a pair of smaller posts 1.1 metres apart forms a side gate for everyday use.

The posts are built of alternating courses of brick and stone, which gives them horizontal stripes (Agency for Cultural Affairs), the feature the Agency singles out in its description.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes the distinctive striped finish of brick and stone and the way the gate gives the plant a proper front, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.

What to Look For

Get close to the posts to see how the brick and stone courses alternate (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Compare the main posts with the smaller pair of the side gate: the same banding, simply scaled down.

Visiting

The gate is an outdoor structure on the east side of Saba Shiroyama Park and can be seen up close (Fukuyama City cultural properties map).
