A long range running north behind the east-west wing
Kamotsuru Sake Brewery No. 2 Brewhouse North-South Wing (賀茂鶴酒造二号蔵南北棟, Kamotsuru Shuzō Nigōgura Nanbokutō) is a two-story Dozo-zukuri earthen-walled sake brewhouse from the late Meiji period (1898 to 1912) at the head office of Kamotsuru Sake Brewery in Saijo Honmachi, Higashihiroshima City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 28, 2017.
It joins the rear east end of the No. 2 east-west wing and runs north, its ridge on a north-south line. The main body measures 15 by 6 ken (one ken is about 1.8 meters), with a lean-to (Geya) 3 ken deep on the west side, for a building area of 625 square meters.
Narrow windows with three plastered bars
The walls follow the front wing, with Namako-kabe tilework above the stone footing and white Shikkui plaster above. What sets the Kamotsuru Sake Brewery No. 2 Brewhouse North-South Wing apart is its many narrow windows, each half a ken (about 0.9 meters) wide, and each fitted with three thick plastered bars.
Bands of namako tile also frame the doorways. The agency praises the way windows and tile bands break up a very large expanse of wall; count the repeating three-bar windows along the side to see how it works.
Why the Kamotsuru Sake Brewery No. 2 Brewhouse North-South Wing was registered
It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. With the east-west wing it forms an L-shaped core for the No. 2 Brewhouse, and the No. 3 Brewhouse adjoins the same front wing on the west, showing how Saijo breweries grew by joining kura together from the late Meiji period onward.
