A late Taisho chimney lettered for the fourth brewery
Kamotsuru Sake Brewery No. 4 Brewhouse Chimney (賀茂鶴酒造四号蔵煙突, Kamotsuru Shuzō Yongōgura Entotsu) is a brick chimney from the late Taisho era (1919 to 1926) at the head office of Kamotsuru Sake Brewery in Saijo Honmachi, Higashihiroshima City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 28, 2017.
It stands almost against the west side of the No. 4 Brewhouse. Its base is 1.8 meters a side and it rises 22 meters, second only to the No. 3 chimney among Kamotsuru's four registered chimneys.
A near twin of the No. 3 chimney
The brick is laid in English bond, the top steps out in a corbelled crown, and a steel reinforcing frame on the upper shaft carries the lettering "Kamotsuru Fourth Brewery".
The design closely follows the early Taisho No. 3 chimney: 1.9 meters and 23.4 meters there, 1.8 meters and 22 meters for the Kamotsuru Sake Brewery No. 4 Brewhouse Chimney. Built a few years apart, the two seem to share one design approach. With the steam vent of the No. 4 boiler room and the No. 4 well nearby, the brewhouse's working equipment is grouped on its west side.
Why the Kamotsuru Sake Brewery No. 4 Brewhouse Chimney was registered
It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, the agency calling it one of the landmarks that symbolize Saijo's skyline of brewery chimneys. The No. 4 Brewhouse stopped brewing in 1995, but the Kamotsuru Sake Brewery No. 4 Brewhouse Chimney still stands beside it.
