Long side to the street

Kamikawa Warehouse No. 1 (上川倉庫一号倉庫) on Miyashita-dori in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, is a single-storey brick warehouse with a timber frame, built in 1904; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 20, 2001 (number 01-0039).

Kamikawa Warehouse No. 1 stands on the Miyashita-dori front of the block, immediately west of the timber office. It turns its long side, the side parallel to the ridge, to the street, a placement the Agency for Cultural Affairs makes a point of recording.

One half of a matched pair

The warehouse has a building area of 165 m² and a metal sheet roof. Timber framing combined with brick walls is the construction shared by all six warehouses on the site.

On the far side of the office stands Warehouse No. 8, built in the same year, 1904. In its description of No. 8 the agency says the two are similar in size and appearance, and that together they give the street a heavy, continuous brick front in contrast with the timber office, a modern streetscape in the making.

Seen from Miyashita-dori, the arrangement is symmetrical: a brick warehouse on each side of the wooden office. Kamikawa Warehouse No. 1 is the western half.

Registration and later use

Kamikawa Warehouse No. 1 was registered on November 20, 2001, for its contribution to the historic landscape.

According to the agency, at the time of registration it served as a multipurpose hall widely used by local residents, one sign of how the warehouses were folded into the life of the city once storage ended.
