A timber office in a brick block

The Kamikawa Warehouse Office (上川倉庫事務所) on Miyashita-dori in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, is a 2-storey timber Western-style building completed in 1913; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 20, 2001 (number 01-0038).

It stands near the middle of the Miyashita-dori frontage of the Kamikawa Warehouses. Warehouse No. 1 to the west and Warehouse No. 8 to the east present brick to the street; between them, the Kamikawa Warehouse Office shows painted boards. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it is the only timber building on the site.

A gable dressed for the street

The walls are weatherboarded and the roof is metal sheet. The gable facing the street is built up as a pediment, and a pointed finial sits on its apex.

At the centre of the upper floor is a round-arched window with a keystone at the crown and a moulded surround. The agency singles out this street gable as the part of the Kamikawa Warehouse Office that received the most careful design.

On the east side a brick chimney rises against the boards. It is the one brick element on the building, and it ties the office visually to the warehouses behind it.

Its place among the seven

The Kamikawa Warehouse Office was registered on November 20, 2001, together with the six warehouses. They were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape; the office alone was registered as a model of design.

With a building area of 120 m², it is the smallest of the seven, yet it holds the centre of the front, a light timber face set between the heavy brick walls of Nos. 1 and 8.

Visiting

We found no information on public access to the interior as of October 2026. The pedimented gable and the arched window can be seen from the pavement on Miyashita-dori.

If you photograph the Kamikawa Warehouse Office from the street, keep clear of people walking past.
