The largest warehouse, at the centre
Kamikawa Warehouse No. 11 (Daisetsu Craft Beer Hall), 上川倉庫十一号倉庫 in Japanese, on Miyashita-dori in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, is a single-storey brick warehouse with a timber frame, built in 1913; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 20, 2001 (number 01-0044).
Kamikawa Warehouse No. 11 stands at the centre of the site, surrounded by the other warehouses. With a building area of 430 m², it is, according to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, both the largest of the warehouses and the last to be built. The construction that began with Warehouse No. 2 in 1900 ended here.
Pediments at both ends
What sets Kamikawa Warehouse No. 11 apart is the treatment of its gable ends. The Agency for Cultural Affairs contrasts it with the other warehouses, whose gables are kept out of sight: here both are dressed as triangular pediments, each framed by a cornice with two tiers of dentils.
The openings use segmental arches, flattened arches formed from part of a circle. Finishing both gables as if each were a front suits a building placed in the middle of the block, where it is seen from every side.
Registration and the beer hall
Kamikawa Warehouse No. 11 was registered on November 20, 2001, for its contribution to the historic landscape. The agency records that it was already serving as a beer hall at the time.
The company that runs it, Daisetsu Ji Beer, was founded in January 1996 and obtained its brewing licence in October of the same year. The Daisetsu Ji Beer Hall serves its local beers with food made from produce grown around Asahikawa.
