East of the office

Kamikawa Warehouse No. 8 (上川倉庫八号倉庫) on Miyashita-dori in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, is a single-storey brick warehouse with a timber frame, built in 1904; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 20, 2001 (number 01-0042).

Kamikawa Warehouse No. 8 faces Miyashita-dori directly east of the timber office at the centre of the Kamikawa Warehouses front. It has a gabled roof, tiled with some sections in metal sheet.

English bond and dark corner piers

The walls are laid in English bond: one course shows the long faces of the bricks (stretchers), the next their short ends (headers), and so on up the wall, which gives the surface a fine horizontal banding. Step close and you can follow the alternation course by course.

At the corners, piers are built in over-burnt brick, fired harder and darker than the red brick of the walls. They read as dark pilasters at each end, sharpening the outline of the building.

A pair with No. 1

Kamikawa Warehouse No. 8 was registered on November 20, 2001, for its contribution to the historic landscape.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that No. 8 closely resembles Warehouse No. 1, built in the same year, 1904, in size and appearance. The two stand east and west of the timber office, and the agency credits them with giving the street a heavy, continuous brick front that contrasts with the office and helped shape a modern streetscape. Both have a building area of 165 m².
