About the Ishido Family Residence

The Ishido Family Residence (石堂家住宅, Ishidō-ke Jūtaku) is an old family estate in Ogaichi, Sayo Town, Hyogo Prefecture, where nine structures built between the late Edo period and the late Meiji period were registered together as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan in 2012.

Ogaichi (大垣内) is a small settlement in a valley drained by the Makuyama River, which flows east. According to Heibonsha's historical gazetteer of Japanese place names, Ogaichi was originally part of neighboring Nishihongo village and became a village in its own right in 1684. The document recording that split survives among the Ishido family papers. The same entry notes that the old Mimasaka road, a route in use from ancient into medieval times, ran along this valley.

The estate sits beside the river. At its center stands a large thatched main house of the late Edo period, facing south, which the Agency for Cultural Affairs describes as a good example of the big farmhouses of the Harima region.

The nine registered structures

All nine parts of the Ishido Family Residence were registered on February 23, 2012, each under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency's database gives the following dates and sizes.

  • Main House: late Edo period (1751–1830), altered in the early Showa period and around 1962; wooden, single story with a partial upper floor, 256 m²
  • Rice Storehouse and Inner Storehouse: end of the Edo period (1830–1868); two-story earthen storehouse, 80 m²
  • Front Gate: end of the Edo period, altered around 1987; wooden, 2.6 m wide, with side wings
  • South Wall: end of the Edo period; earthen wall 45 m long with a small gate
  • Northeastern Wall: end of the Edo period; earthen wall 7.9 m long
  • Idoya (well house): early Meiji period (1868–1882); wooden, copper roof, 0.9 m²
  • Middle Gate: early Meiji period; wooden, copper roof, 1.3 m wide, with earthen walls on both sides
  • Mukaizashiki (detached reception wing): mid-Meiji period (1883–1897); wooden, single story, 48 m², with a connecting corridor
  • Kadoya and West Gate: late Meiji period, altered around 1981; the Kadoya is a two-story wooden barn of 112 m², and the gate is 3.8 m wide

The sources disagree on the well house. The Agency's database dates it to the early Meiji period, while the Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education list says late Meiji. This site follows the Agency. The prefectural list records the owner as a private individual.

How the Ishido Family Residence is laid out

The plan of the Ishido Family Residence is easiest to read from the south. The Front Gate stands at the middle of the south side, with the South Wall running east and west from it on a base of fitted stone. At the east end of that wall a small gate opens beside the Mukaizashiki, which occupies the southeast corner.

Inside the Front Gate, the Idoya well house stands just south of the main house. The Middle Gate sits in front of the formal Shikidai entrance of the main house, and its earthen walls divide the front court from the inner garden. Along the east side runs the long Rice Storehouse and Inner Storehouse, and from its northeast corner the Northeastern Wall bends north to meet the rear wall. On the west side stands the tall two-story Kadoya barn, with the West Gate to its south.

The main house, the storehouse and the walls around the Front Gate were in place by the end of the Edo period. The well house, the Middle Gate, the Mukaizashiki and the Kadoya were added during the Meiji period. Each structure has its own page with details of its construction.

Visiting the Ishido Family Residence

The Ishido Family Residence is a private home. Neither the town nor the prefecture lists any open days, and as of October 2026 we found no information about public or special openings. Please stay off the property and view it only from the road.

The Agency's descriptions single out the Front Gate and South Wall on the south side, the Kadoya on the west, and the storehouse and Northeastern Wall on the east as the parts that shape the estate's appearance. The gate and wall face the road on the south side, and the main house stands behind them. Take photographs from the public road and avoid lingering at the gate or peering into the grounds.

The nearest station is Kozuki Station on the JR Kishin Line. The Ishido Family Residence lies about 5 km northwest of the station in a straight line, in a narrow valley (an estimate based on map positions). You will need a car or taxi from the station. There is no visitor parking.
