About the Ishido Family Residence Mukaizashiki
The Ishido Family Residence Mukaizashiki (石堂家住宅向座敷, Ishidō-ke Jūtaku Mukaizashiki) is a detached reception wing of the mid-Meiji period (1883–1897) in the southeast corner of the Ishido estate in Ogaichi, Sayo Town, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2012.
Mukaizashiki means roughly "the reception room across the way." The Ishido Family Residence Mukaizashiki is a single-story wooden building with its ridge running north to south, measuring 8.5 m by 5.6 m with a building area of 48 m². It has an irimoya roof of pantiles, with lean-to Geya eaves all around, and a corridor links it to the main house.
An open, refined annex
There are only two rooms: a principal reception room and an anteroom. A veranda turns the corner along the south and west sides, so the building opens wide to the garden.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the Ishido Family Residence Mukaizashiki an open and elegant detached building. It was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape. Set beside a thatched farmhouse of the late Edo period, this tiled guest wing is one of the Meiji-era additions to the estate.
What to look for
The details are the point. The south veranda has a railing (Kōran), and both the railing and the transom panels (Ranma) inside are worked in fine, delicate designs.
Its position matters too. The Ishido Family Residence Mukaizashiki stands against the east end of the South Wall, and at that junction the wall has a small Munamon gate 0.8 m wide. It gives this corner of the estate an entrance separate from the Front Gate.
Visiting the Ishido Family Residence Mukaizashiki
The Ishido Family Residence Mukaizashiki is part of a private home, and the interior is not open. The railing and transoms face the garden inside the property and are hard to see from outside.
From the road you can probably see only the roof above the South Wall and the small gate at its east end. Take photographs only from the public road.
