About the Ishido Family Residence Kadoya and West Gate
The Ishido Family Residence Kadoya and West Gate (石堂家住宅角屋及び西門, Ishidō-ke Jūtaku Kadoya oyobi Nishimon) is a tall two-story barn of the late Meiji period and the gate beside it on the west side of the Ishido estate in Ogaichi, Sayo Town, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2012.
The barn, called the kadoya, and the West Gate are registered as a single item. The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates them to the late Meiji period and notes alterations around 1981. Its year field reads "1898–1012", which is evidently a typo for 1912, the last year of Meiji.
A tall barn on the west front
The kadoya stands at the middle of the west side with its ridge running north to south. It is a two-story wooden building of 16 m by 6.9 m, with a building area of 112 m², under an irimoya roof of pantiles. The Agency describes it as a barn of unusual height.
The Kadoya of the Ishido Family Residence Kadoya and West Gate rises high and stands like a wall along the west edge of the estate, which is why the Agency credits it with forming the western front of the property. It was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape.
What to look for
The West Gate stands just south of the barn. It is 3.8 m wide under a gabled (kirizuma) pantile roof. Its single wide board door slides to one side, and a small wicket door (Kugurido) is set into it. Opening the big door would let a cart through, while people could use the wicket day to day.
The Front Gate on the south side is the formal entrance; the West Gate is a working gate beside the barn, and the two are registered as one item.
Visiting the Ishido Family Residence Kadoya and West Gate
The Ishido Family Residence Kadoya and West Gate belongs to a private home, and the interior is not open.
Because the barn and gate stand on the west edge of the property, they may be visible from the west, but we have not confirmed the road on that side. Stay off private land and take photographs only from the public road.
