About the Ishido Family Residence Northeastern Wall

The Ishido Family Residence Northeastern Wall (石堂家住宅東北塀, Ishidō-ke Jūtaku Tōhokubei) is a tall wall of the end of the Edo period (1830–1868) that runs north from the northeast corner of the rice storehouse on the Ishido estate in Ogaichi, Sayo Town, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2012.

The Ishido Family Residence Northeastern Wall is 7.9 m long under a gabled (kirizuma) roof of pantiles. It bends as it leaves the corner of the storehouse and runs north to join the rear wall of the estate. The rear wall itself is not registered.

A wall continuous with the storehouse

The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the Ishido Family Residence Northeastern Wall as built in one continuous style with the rice storehouse, forming an attractive part of the estate's scenery. It was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape.

It is only about a sixth the length of the South Wall, but it dates from the same period as the storehouse and closes off the northeast corner. Along the east side, the long storehouse wall flows straight into this one without a break.

What to look for

Watch the height. Beyond the bend, the wall rises in steps until it meets the rear wall, and the stepped line of the tiled coping gives a short wall a sense of movement.

The wall is built in the Shinkabe manner, with posts left visible, and coated in white lime plaster. The lower part is clad in vertical boards (Tateita-bari). White plaster above a boarded base looks nothing like the clay finish of the South Wall. Two walls of the same period, at the front and back of one estate, were finished in entirely different ways.
