About the Ishido Family Residence South Wall

The Ishido Family Residence South Wall (石堂家住宅南塀, Ishidō-ke Jūtaku Minamibei) is an earthen wall of the end of the Edo period (1830–1868) that runs east and west from the Front Gate along the south side of the Ishido estate in Ogaichi, Sayo Town, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2012.

The Ishido Family Residence South Wall is 45 m long in total and roofed with pantiles. At its east end, where it meets the Mukaizashiki guest wing, it opens in a small Munamon gate 0.8 m wide, which is included in the registration.

The estate's face, built on stone

The wall stands on a base of Kirikomi-hagi masonry, stones cut and fitted together without gaps. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out this stonework for its fine craftsmanship. Look at the base as well as the earthen wall and tiled roof above it.

The Agency says the Ishido Family Residence South Wall, together with the Front Gate, gives the estate a dignified front. It was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape. The south face of the estate is the gate and this 45 m wall working together.

What to look for

Notice the wall finish. The plaster is left at the intermediate coat of clay, without the white lime plaster top coat, so the color and texture of the earth show through. The Northeastern Wall on the same estate is finished in white lime plaster, and the difference is easy to see.

At the east end the wall meets the Mukaizashiki, and a small gate opens at the joint. Follow the wall east from the formal Front Gate and you end at this plain gate 0.8 m wide.

Visiting the Ishido Family Residence South Wall

The Ishido Family Residence South Wall belongs to a private home, and you cannot enter the grounds.

Since it runs along the south side of the property, the wall is seen from the road on the south (we have not checked the road on site). Walking a little way along it makes the stonework and the clay finish easier to compare. Do not touch or climb the wall, and take photographs only from the public road.
