About the Ishido Family Residence Rice Storehouse and Inner Storehouse
The Ishido Family Residence Rice Storehouse and Inner Storehouse (石堂家住宅米蔵及び内蔵, Ishidō-ke Jūtaku Komegura oyobi Uchigura) is a large earthen storehouse built at the end of the Edo period (1830–1868) along the east side of the Ishido estate in Ogaichi, Sayo Town, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2012.
It stands east of the main house with its ridge running north to south, measuring 11 m by 5.9 m with a building area of 80 m². It is a two-story earthen-walled storehouse under a gabled (kirizuma) roof of pantiles.
Two storehouses in one building
The name joins two storehouses because the building holds two. Both floors are divided into two rooms: the south room is the uchigura (inner storehouse) and the north room is the komegura (rice storehouse). In houses of this kind, the rice store usually held harvested and tax rice and the inner store held household valuables, though no record of the Ishido contents has been published.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs places the Ishido Family Residence Rice Storehouse and Inner Storehouse among the large storehouses that frame an old family estate. It was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape. Its long wall closes off the east side of the property and helps give the estate its outline.
What to look for
Watch where the openings face. On the ground floor, each room has its door on the west side, toward the main house, which made it easy to go back and forth from the living quarters. The upper-floor windows open to the east, on the outward face of the estate.
From the northeast corner of the building the Northeastern Wall runs north in the same continuous style, linking the storehouse to the rear wall. Read the storehouse and that wall together as the estate's eastern front.
Visiting the Ishido Family Residence Rice Storehouse and Inner Storehouse
The Ishido Family Residence Rice Storehouse and Inner Storehouse belongs to a private home, and the interior is not open.
Because it stands on the east edge of the property, its outer wall and upper windows may be visible from the east, but we have not confirmed what road runs on that side. Stay off private land and take photographs only from the public road.
