A Small Meiji Storehouse

The Nishio Family Residence New Storehouse 1 (西尾家住宅新蔵一, Nishio-ke Jūtaku Shingura Ichi) is an early Meiji-era, two-storey Dozo-zukuri earthen storehouse standing south of the Heyagura and Nakagura storehouses at the Nishio Family Residence in Oyamakami, Tambasasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 23 July 2004.

It runs north to south and measures 4 ken by 2 ken, a building area of 35 square metres, under a gabled roof of Sangawara-buki tiles. Its ridge lines up with the storehouse to the north, extending a row of stores along the west side of the main house.

There are two "new storehouses" at the Nishio compound. New Storehouse 2 is a large brewery building beyond the water channel; the Nishio New Storehouse 1 is far smaller and joined the row of household stores.

Why It Was Registered

New Storehouse 1 was registered as a building that contributes to the historic landscape. Its granite base, boarded lower walls and white Shikkui plaster above follow the same scheme as the Nishio brewery buildings such as the Storehouse Gallery.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the south gable end. Black boarding below and white plaster above meet under the triangle of the gable to give the row of storehouses a neat southern end.

What to Look At

Granite footing

The Nishio Family Residence New Storehouse 1 sits on a base of stacked granite that lifts the earthen walls clear of ground damp.

Charred cedar and plaster

The lower walls are clad in vertical boards of Yakisugi, cedar charred on the surface to resist water and insects, with plaster above. The boards protect the white walls from rain splash.

A floating roof

The roof is an Okiyane, set on top of the earthen body as a separate layer, the same arrangement as on the storehouse next door.

One door

An earthen lean-to roof on the east side shelters a single doorway. Where the Heyagura and Nakagura building has two doors for two stores, New Storehouse 1 has one.

Visiting

New Storehouse 1 stands inside the compound, and as of October 2026 there was no notice of public access. Even its handsome south gable faces into the property, so it is hard to see from the old San'in Road. Please do not enter the grounds.
