The Annex on the Road

The Nishio Family Residence Annex (西尾家住宅離れ, Nishio-ke Jūtaku Hanare) is a late Edo-period, single-storey timber building in the northeast corner of the Nishio Family Residence in Oyamakami, Tambasasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, registered with its side gate and wall as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 23 July 2004.

Its ridge runs east to west along the old San'in Road. It measures 5 and a half ken by 2 and a half ken under a gabled Sangawara-buki tile roof, a building area of 50 square metres.

A side gate opens between the west end of the Nishio annex and the northeast corner of the main house. The Agency for Cultural Affairs counts the annex as one of the elements that frame the forecourt in front of the main entrance.

Why It Was Registered

The annex was registered as a building that contributes to the historic landscape. Long and low beside the road, it forms the northern edge of the compound together with the forecourt gate and wall to the west.

The forecourt before the main entrance is enclosed by the main house, the annex and the garden wall. The annex holds its eastern side and also screens the inner compound from the road.

What to Look At

Parallel to the road

The Nishio Family Residence Annex runs east to west, parallel to the road, so its long side, 5 and a half ken, faces passers-by.

A lean-to on the south

On the south side, facing into the compound, a Geya lean-to roof adds a sheltered strip along the forecourt.

The stepped west end

The western 1 and a half ken of the building sit under a lower roof, an Ochimune, so the roofline steps down toward the main house next door.

Side gate and wall

A side gate opens between the southern end of the annex's west wall and the northeast corner of the main house. Where the forecourt gate was the formal entrance for guests, this gate was probably for everyday comings and goings.

Visiting

The Nishio Family Residence Annex is privately owned, and as of October 2026 there was no notice of public access to the interior.

Because it stands right on the old San'in Road, its long north side and roof can be seen from the road. Please do not go through the side gate.
