The Big Brewery Store across the Channel

The Nishio Family Residence New Storehouse 2 (西尾家住宅新蔵二, Nishio-ke Jūtaku Shingura Ni) is a late Meiji-era, two-storey Dozo-zukuri sake storehouse built on land added to the Nishio Family Residence beyond a water channel in Oyamakami, Tambasasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 23 July 2004.

It runs north to south and measures 12 ken by 6 ken, with a building area of 279 square metres. Among the eleven registered structures at the Nishio compound only the sake brewery (360 square metres) and the main house (332 square metres) are larger.

A channel flows north to south along the west side of the teahouse and the two storehouses next to it; the Nishio New Storehouse 2 stands on the far bank, outside the original plot.

Why It Was Registered

New Storehouse 2 was registered as a building that contributes to the historic landscape. It is a large two-storey store with a gabled Sangawara-buki tile roof, entered from the gable end in the Tsumairi manner, and its north gable faces the old San'in Road.

From the road the triangular gable wall rises high, crossed near the top by a drip moulding. Along the west wall, small windows are set in two rows of six. That disciplined grid of openings on a broad plaster wall announces the brewery to anyone passing.

What to Look At

The north gable and its high drip ledge

Because the Nishio Family Residence New Storehouse 2 is entered from its gable end, the gable facing the road is its front. High on that north wall runs a mizukiri, a small ledge or hood that throws rainwater clear of the plaster below.

Twelve small windows

On the west side, small windows are arranged in two rows of six, evenly spaced along a wall 12 ken long. It is the building's most recognisable feature.

Beyond the old boundary

The storehouse stands beyond the channel that once marked the west edge of the compound. It was probably built there to suit the scale of brewing in the late Meiji era.

Visiting

The Nishio Family Residence New Storehouse 2 is privately owned, and as of October 2026 there was no notice of public access to the interior.

Its north gable, with the high drip ledge, faces the old San'in Road and can be seen from there. Where the west wall and its windows can be seen from has not been confirmed. Please do not enter the grounds.
