A Gate Set Into the Garden Wall
The Former Tango Family Residence Garden Gate and Wall (旧丹後家住宅庭門及び塀, Kyū Tango-ke Jūtaku Niwamon oyobi Hei) is an early Shōwa-period (1926–1945) gate and board wall in Notobekami, Nakanoto-machi, Kashima District, Ishikawa Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 27 October 2017. The gate is timber with a tiled roof and 1.7 metres wide; the wall, also timber and tiled, runs for 29 metres in total. Its registration number is 17-280.
The wall encloses the garden on the east side of the main house, and the gate opens at one of its corners; the two are registered together as a single item. At 29 metres the wall is longer than the front wall by the entrance, which runs 21 metres.
Why It Was Registered
The Tango garden gate and wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. Both the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Nakanoto Town describe it as the enclosure that marks off the garden east of the main house.
Its north and west faces run along the road, so the outline of the garden becomes part of the street view. Where the front wall presents the entrance, the Former Tango Family Residence Garden Gate and Wall shows the garden side of the property to passers-by.
The Corner Where the Roof Steps Up
The place to look is the corner where the Former Tango Family Residence Garden Gate and Wall meets the front wall. Here the wall turns a right angle, a Kaneore, lifts its ridge a step and opens a gate one Ken wide. The wall's roof simply rises to become the gate's roof, so the gate reads as part of the wall rather than as a separate structure.
The wall stands on two courses of cut stone. Posts rise from the stone, and bracket arms, Udeki, carry widely spaced Taruki rafters and a roof of Sangawara-buki tiles.
The wall itself is board-panelled, with an open gap left between the boards and the roof. The front wall is plastered in its upper part; here, timber and open space keep the top light. Stand at the corner and you can compare the two finishes side by side.
Seeing the Garden Gate and Wall
With its north and west faces on the road, the Tango garden gate and wall can be seen from the street even while the house is closed. The gate corner is also the best spot to see both the join with the front wall and the stepped-up ridge.
Behind the gate lies the garden, part of the town-owned property. Please do not go through the gate; view it from the road.
