The Wall Along the Road
The Former Tango Family Residence Front Wall (旧丹後家住宅表塀, Kyū Tango-ke Jūtaku Omotebei) is an early Shōwa-period (1926–1945) timber-and-board wall in Notobekami, Nakanoto-machi, Kashima District, Ishikawa Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 27 October 2017. Tiled along its top, it runs for 21 metres in total and stands 2.4 metres high. Its registration number is 17-279.
The wall extends to the left and right of the main entrance, closing off the forecourt in front of the house and defining the street side of the plot. It is the first thing you see of the Former Tango Family Residence from the road.
Why It Was Registered
The Tango front wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a key element of the roadside scene, and Nakanoto Town describes it as a plastered wall with openwork in its upper part that helps shape the view along the road.
Since the main house stands back from the road, it is the front wall, not the house, that meets the street and serves as the public face of the property.
Plaster Above, Boards Below
At the foot of the Former Tango Family Residence Front Wall, long Nobeishi kerbstones are laid flat, and the posts rise from them. Bracket arms, Udeki, project from the posts to carry widely spaced Taruki rafters and a roof of Sangawara-buki tiles.
The face of the wall is split in two. The upper band is Shikkui lime plaster pierced with openings; the lower part is vertical board panelling. That pairing of white plaster over timber continues for the full 21 metres.
At 2.4 metres the wall is well above head height, tall enough to screen the forecourt, while the openings keep the upper band from feeling heavy.
The comparison with the garden gate and wall, which joins it at the corner, is worth making. That wall leaves an open gap between its boards and its roof and stands on two courses of cut stone. The front wall stands on kerbstones and is plastered above. Plaster, in other words, is kept for the wall in front of the entrance.
Seeing the Front Wall
Because the Tango front wall faces the road, it can be seen from the street even while the house itself is closed. Step back a little to take in how it spreads to either side of the entrance.
Up close, look up to see how the posts sit on the kerbstones and how the bracket arms carry the rafters. Please stay on the road and do not enter the grounds.
