Kitaoji Rosanjin Former Residence
The Kitaoji Rosanjin Former Residence (北大路魯山人寓居) at Yamashiro Onsen, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, is where Kitaoji Rosanjin worked during his stay at the spa in the Taisho era; its early Meiji main house and its storehouse of 1890 are Registered Tangible Cultural Properties (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
According to the Ishikawa Prefecture official travel site, Rosanjin (1883 to 1959) stayed at Yamashiro Onsen for a time in 1915 to concentrate on calligraphy. Today, as Iroha Soan, the house keeps its tatami rooms and garden in their original layout and displays works by Rosanjin and other artists of his time.
The Two Buildings
The main house, a two-storey timber building with a gabled roof below a shrine at the heart of the spa town, has its entrance set back in a recessed north-east corner and a small smoke-vent roof on top (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The two-storey storehouse stands at the west end of the plot, its ridge at right angles to the main house.
Both were registered on April 24, 2001, for their contribution to the historic landscape (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each building is described on its own page.
Visiting
According to the Ishikawa Prefecture travel site, it is open from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30) and closed on Wednesdays and over the New Year; admission is 560 yen for adults, 280 yen for seniors, and free for children under 15.
