The Goyashiki East Storehouse
Goyashiki (Former Inoue Family Residence) East Storehouse (郷屋敷（旧井上家住宅）東蔵, higashigura) is an early Meiji-era storehouse at the southeast corner of the Inoue family estate in Mure-cho, Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on October 12, 2001.
The narrow building runs north to south and anchors the east end of the street facade. The national database records a 2-storey dozo structure with a tiled roof and a building area of 34 square meters, dated to the early Meiji era, shortly after 1868.
A Storehouse with Two Faces
The Goyashiki (Former Inoue Family Residence) East Storehouse has a hongawara tile roof that changes form along its length: the south end is hip-and-gable, the north end a plain gable. That change of form along a single roof is what gives the building its character.
The walls are white Shikkui plaster, except at the south end, where the frame is exposed Shinkabe work and the upper floor has openings; that part was once used as a zashiki, a sitting room. A storeroom and a reception space under one roof is an unusual arrangement. The building was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the official commentary calls it simple in form but indispensable to the corner of the estate.
Seen from the Corner
Because it stands at the southeast corner, the Goyashiki East Storehouse is the first building you see when approaching along the road from the east. Compare the hip-and-gable south end with the patch of exposed timber in the white wall and the upper openings, and the former sitting room becomes easy to place.
Looking east from the Front Gate, the East Storehouse closes the row after the Rice Storehouse, giving the estate a firm corner.
Visiting the East Storehouse
The south face and southeast corner of the Goyashiki (Former Inoue Family Residence) East Storehouse are visible from the road. The Goyashiki website says its south-facing street storehouses house a tea room, shop and waiting area, but it does not say how the East Storehouse is used. Ask the restaurant if you want to know about the interior.
