The Goyashiki North Storehouse East
Goyashiki (Former Inoue Family Residence) North Storehouse East (郷屋敷(旧井上家住宅)北蔵東, kitagura higashi) is an early Meiji-era storehouse near the middle of the north boundary of the Inoue family estate in Mure-cho, Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on October 12, 2001.
A covered passage connects it to the Detached Parlor. The national database records a 2-storey dozo structure with a tiled roof and a building area of 46 square meters, the largest of the estate's 2-storey storehouses. It is dated to the early Meiji era, shortly after 1868.
A Wall Against the Rice Fields
The Goyashiki (Former Inoue Family Residence) North Storehouse East was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. It has a gabled roof of pantiles and white Shikkui walls, and its only openings are 2 high windows on the rear, north side, making it a closed, defensive box.
The official commentary stresses that the storehouse draws a clear line between the house plot and the rice paddies to the north. With few windows, its white wall facing the fields marks the northern edge of the estate at a glance. It is still used for storage, so it continues to do the job it was built for.
What to Look For
On the Goyashiki North Storehouse East, notice how differently each side is treated. The north face has just 2 small windows set high, and the plain white wall doubles as the outer edge of the estate.
The North Storehouse West is built directly against its west wall, and the Middle Earthen Wall, which runs behind the Detached Parlor, is fixed to its east wall. Storehouses and wall together close off the northeast of the compound, which is easiest to follow with a site plan in mind.
Visiting the North Storehouse East
The Goyashiki (Former Inoue Family Residence) North Storehouse East is still a working storeroom and its interior is not open. It stands at the very back of the estate, so even diners may not get a close look.
The land to the north is farmland. If you look from outside, stay off the fields and private property. Hours and directions are on the Goyashiki (Former Inoue Family Residence) group page.
