The Goyashiki Detached Parlor
Goyashiki (Former Inoue Family Residence) Detached Parlor (郷屋敷（旧井上家住宅）離座敷, hanare-zashiki) is a 2-storey reception wing built in 1935 behind the main house of the Inoue family estate in Mure-cho, Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on October 12, 2001.
It stands behind the south-facing Main House and runs parallel to it: a 2-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 67 square meters. Most of the estate dates from the early Meiji era, so the Detached Parlor belongs to a later generation. It went up at the same time as the Connecting Corridor that links it to the Main House.
A Model of Design
The Goyashiki (Former Inoue Family Residence) Detached Parlor was registered as a model of design. Its hipped roof is laid with pantiles, and the upper floor matches the ground floor in plan. Each level has 2 rooms, and the east room on each has a Tokonoma, the decorative alcove of a Japanese reception room.
The official commentary praises the neat sukiya-style design and the care given to small details, singling out the shelves and the shoji beside the alcove (Tokowaki). In short, the family added a more refined guest suite on 2 levels behind the Meiji house during the 1930s.
Looking at the Detached Parlor
The Main House and the Goyashiki Detached Parlor face each other across a courtyard, and with the Connecting Corridor the three buildings close it on every side. Seen from the Main House, the parlor's upper and lower walls rise in one plane, with no step between them.
If you get into the rooms, look closely at the alcove of the east room. The shelving and the shoji beside the tokonoma show a finish of a different order from the estate's storehouses and gates.
Visiting the Detached Parlor
The Goyashiki website does not say how the rooms of the Goyashiki (Former Inoue Family Residence) Detached Parlor are used today. If you hope to sit there, ask the restaurant when you book. Because the parlor stands north of the Main House across the courtyard, a room facing the courtyard may give you a view of it.
