About the Kinryo Fujii Family Residence Storehouse
The Kinryo Fujii Family Residence Storehouse (金両藤井家住宅土蔵) is the two-storey earthen storehouse of 1918 at the Kinryo soy sauce brewery in Noma, Shodoshima Town, Shozu District, Kagawa Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 31, 2003.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a two-storey earthen-walled building with a tiled roof and a building area of 34 square metres; registration number 37-0135, owned by Kinryo Co., Ltd. Six structures at Kinryo, the north moromi storehouse, soy sauce storehouse, and the Fujii main house, storehouse, main gate and wall, were registered on the same day (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Was Registered
The Kinryo Fujii Family Residence Storehouse was registered as a building that would be difficult to reproduce. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a carefully made store with drip tiles round the line between the board dado and the plaster walls; an ink inscription under the ridge beam gives its date.
What to Look For
The Fujii storehouse runs north-south south-east of the main house: a two-storey gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) earthen store on a trapezoidal plan under hongawara tiles, with a tiled canopy over the entrance on the north gable (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Drip tiles run along the line between the board dado and the plaster, and the brackets of the window hood on the south gable carry plaster relief (Agency for Cultural Affairs), fine examples of the plasterer's craft.
Hishio no Sato
According to Shodoshima Town, Hishio no Sato is an area of soy sauce breweries and the houses of families who prospered from the trade; many brewery buildings are registered cultural properties still used for brewing today.
