About the Kinryo Soy Sauce Storehouse

The Kinryo Soy Sauce Storehouse (金両醤油蔵) is the single-storey timber soy sauce storehouse of the Taisho era at the Kinryo soy sauce brewery in Noma, Shodoshima Town, Shozu District, Kagawa Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 31, 2003.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 217 square metres; registration number 37-0133, owned by Kinryo Co., Ltd. Six structures at Kinryo, the north moromi storehouse, soy sauce storehouse, and the Fujii main house, storehouse, main gate and wall, were registered on the same day (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Kinryo Soy Sauce Storehouse was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it was originally the koji mixing room and machine room, and that its western half now serves as a soy sauce shop.

What to Look For

The soy sauce storehouse stands south of the eastern half of the north moromi storehouse: a single-storey east-west building 22 metres long, gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) with pantiles, with a raised ventilating roof along almost the whole ridge (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The roof is carried on king-post trusses (Agency for Cultural Affairs); the long raised roof served to ventilate and light the work rooms for koji and machinery.

Hishio no Sato

According to Shodoshima Town, Hishio no Sato is an area of soy sauce breweries and the houses of families who prospered from the trade; many brewery buildings are registered cultural properties still used for brewing today.
