Daigoji Temple Nyoirindo Hall

One of the First Halls of the Upper Temple

The Daigoji Temple Nyoirindo Hall (醍醐寺如意輪堂) is the Momoyama-period Nyoirindo at the summit of the upper precinct of Daigoji in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City, which in 1954 was designated an Important Cultural Property.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a hall built out on tall posts, five bays by three, single storey, hip-and-gable with its gable to the front and a shingle roof.

According to the Agency, it stands beside the Kaisando at the far end of the upper precinct and dates from 1606.

Daigoji explains that it was one of the first two halls, with the Juntei hall, built by the founder Shobo when he opened the upper temple; the temple chronicle dates the founding to 876.

What to Look For

Daigoji notes that the present building dates from the eleventh year of Keicho and enshrines Nyoirin Kannon with Bishamonten and Kichijoten in the side bays.

Standing beside the Kaisando at the summit, it conveys the history of the upper temple, where Daigoji began.

Daigoji notes that the upper precinct is reached by a steep mountain path of nearly an hour from the Nyonindo at the trailhead.
