Funaoka Onsen

Funaoka Onsen (船岡温泉) is a public bath on Kuramaguchi-dori in Murasakino, Kita Ward, Kyoto; its changing room of 1923, bath building of 1932 and the former Funaokaro and former barber shop of around 1923 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on July 1, 2003 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The bath was first built for the Funaokaro, a restaurant inn (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

A Carved Changing Room and a Tiled Bath

The changing room, of two storeys in timber, has the entrance and the bandai attendant's seat at the front and the changing room behind, with bold wood carvings on the transoms and ceiling. On Kuramaguchi-dori it has an entrance under a cusped karahafu gable added in 1928 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The bath building, in reinforced concrete, replaced the first brick bath. It has round windows, stone railings reused from the Kikusui Bridge that stood at Senbon Kuramaguchi, and decorative tiles inside (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

A Restaurant Inn and a Signboard Shop

West of the bath stands the former Funaokaro, with refined design around its alcoves, transoms and verandah railings. On the street north-east of the changing room, the former barber shop is "signboard architecture", its upper front raised high in mortar (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Bathing

The owner is not listed in the Agency record. According to a GOOD LUCK TRIP page supervised by Funaoka Onsen (updated August 14, 2026), it still runs as a public bath, open 15:00 to 23:30 (from 8:00 on Sundays) and closed on Tuesdays, with an entry fee of 550 yen. From Kyoto Station, take city bus 206 to Senbon Kuramaguchi, then walk 5 minutes.
