A 46-Metre Brick Wall of the Early Showa Period
The Amikan Head Office Brick Wall (アミカン本社煉瓦塀, Amikan Honsha Rengabei) is a brick wall of the early Showa period (1926 to 1944) along the west side of the Amikan Co., Ltd. headquarters at Tomidahama-motomachi, Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on September 10, 2010 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a brick wall 46 metres long in total; registration number 24-0094, owned by Amikan Co., Ltd.
Why It Was Registered
The brick wall was registered as a structure contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes its solid appearance as a reminder of growth driven by modern industry.
What to Look For
The wall runs from both sides of the main gate in front of the office, turning at the corners. Pilasters appear every 2.2 metres, the bays between them are filled with stretcher-bond brickwork, and a band of brick as wide as the pilasters ties them together along the top (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Running 46 metres in front of the gate and office, it preserves the look of an early Showa company frontage (Agency for Cultural Affairs; Yokkaichi City).
