A Small Roof Over the Courtyard Well
Ishikawa Sake Brewery Well House (石川酒造井戸屋形, Ishikawa Shuzō Idoyakata) is a timber wellhead shelter at a sake brewery in Sakuramachi, Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, built in the late Meiji period (1898 to 1912) and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on March 29, 2013. Its registration number is 24-0143, and the listing includes the well itself.
It stands southwest of the central courtyard, directly north of the Main House. The Idoyakata is a timber structure with a gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) pantiled roof and an area of just 6.8 square metres, the smallest of the 15. It has no walls at all. In the middle sits a well framed with stones laid in a square curb.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs sees it as a structure that shapes the grounds of a brewery blessed with abundant, self-flowing groundwater. The place where the water that defines the sake was drawn got its own small tiled roof.
Why It Was Registered
The Ishikawa Sake Brewery Well House was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. It is tiny, but the structure repays a close look.
The four posts lean slightly inward as they rise, a technique called uchikorobi. At the top they are tied by a horizontal beam, the kashiranuki, and diagonal braces called hōzue stiffen each corner where post meets beam. An open-sided shelter is weak against sideways forces; leaning the posts in and bracing the corners lets a light frame carry a heavy tile roof and ride out shaking.
According to the brewery, the grounds hold a well 76 metres deep and a bored well 200 metres deep that flows under its own pressure, and Ishikawa Sake Brewery brews with groundwater from the Suzuka Mountains. Published sources do not identify which well this is. Either way, no building on the site says more plainly that this brewery is built on water.
What to Look For
The thing to find on the Ishikawa Sake Brewery Well House is the lean of the posts. They look upright at first, but each tilts a little toward the center, so from the front the posts under the roof trace a faint trapezoid.
The corner braces repeat at all four corners. In a structure this small, the structural logic is fully on display.
The stone curb in the middle is a square frame with interlocking corners. Set north of the Main House and facing the courtyard, it was probably a spot that family and brewery workers alike passed every day.
