Ishikawa Sake Brewery Former Rice Mill (石川酒造旧精米場, Ishikawa Shuzō Kyū Seimaijō) is a rice-polishing building at a sake brewery in Sakuramachi, Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, built in the mid Meiji period (1883 to 1897) and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on March 29, 2013. Its registration number is 24-0135, and the listing includes a gate.
It occupies the southeast corner of the property. The Former Rice Mill is a Dozo-zukuri building, mostly single storey with a partial upper floor, under a gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) pantiled roof. It measures 10.9 metres by 5.5 metres and covers 98 square metres.
Sake starts with milling. The more of the outer grain is polished away, the cleaner the finished sake, so polishing is the first step that shapes quality. The Ishikawa Sake Brewery Former Rice Mill handled that step, and as the word former suggests, it no longer does.

The Ishikawa Sake Brewery Former Rice Mill was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it lines up with the Main House across the main gate to form the southern front of a large local brewery.
Two doorways open on the west face under a lean-to roof (Geya), each framed in black plaster and jinzōseki togidashi, a render of cement and crushed stone that was ground smooth once set to imitate stone. The technique spread in Japan from the Meiji era on. The walls are white plaster (Shikkui) with overlapping boards (Shitami-itabari) carried unusually high.
The Main House meets the street in black; the Former Rice Mill answers in white with a dark base. Facing each other across the gate, the two give the frontage both contrast and balance. On the east side the Former Rice Mill is also the start of a long run of wall that continues north through the Former Rice Storehouse and the Barn.
What to Look For
The eye-catcher on the Ishikawa Sake Brewery Former Rice Mill is the doorway surrounds: grey artificial stone and black plaster framing each opening like a picture mount against the white wall. It is a surprisingly refined touch for a working shed.
Note how high the weatherboarding climbs. It shielded the wall from cart traffic and rain splash, and that same height carries on along the east side past the rice storehouse and barn.
The gate included in the listing is most likely the main gate between this building and the Main House. Stand square to it and take in both buildings at once, and you see the brewery frontage exactly as Yokkaichi City describes it.
