A Guest Wing West of the House
Ishikawa Sake Brewery West Reception Wing (石川酒造西の座敷, Ishikawa Shuzō Nishi no Zashiki) is a detached suite of guest rooms at a sake brewery in Sakuramachi, Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, built in 1898 (Meiji 31) and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on March 29, 2013. Its registration number is 24-0132, and it was renovated in 2010.
It sits at the southern tip of the property, west of the Main House, and a covered corridor links the two. The building is a single-storey timber structure of 72 square metres, roofed in pantiles (Sangawara-buki) with a hip-and-gable end on one side only.
If the Main House was where the family lived and ran the business, the Ishikawa Sake Brewery West Reception Wing was where they received people. Putting the guest rooms in their own building, a short walk from the household, says something about how a prospering late-Meiji brewery wanted to present itself to buyers and visitors.
Why It Was Registered
The Ishikawa Sake Brewery West Reception Wing was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a well-made example of traditional Japanese architecture built for entertaining guests.
Four rooms are arranged in a two-by-two grid, all under batten-and-board ceilings (Saobuchi-tenjō). On the south side sit the principal room, fitted with an alcove (Tokonoma), and the anteroom beside it, both opening through a narrow wooden veranda onto a front garden. Placing the best room to the south, in the sun and facing the garden, is textbook Zashiki planning.
The building is modest in size. What makes it valuable is that a separate guest wing, tied to the house by a corridor and still paired with its garden, survives on a working brewery site. Among the 15 structures, this is the only one built purely for hospitality.
What to Look For
The heart of the Ishikawa Sake Brewery West Reception Wing is the sightline running from the principal room and anteroom out to the garden. The veranda is set at the threshold so that a seated guest looks straight out onto the planting.
The roof is worth a second glance. Only one end is finished as a hip-and-gable; the other is treated more simply. It is a sensible response to a building squeezed between the Main House and the edge of the plot.
The ceilings use thin battens laid at regular intervals to carry the boards, the standard ceiling of a formal tatami room. All four rooms share it, which keeps the whole wing at the same level of formality.

The Ishikawa Sake Brewery West Reception Wing faces a private garden inside the grounds and can barely be seen from the street. The interior is not open.
