The Great Brewhouse on the North Edge
Ishikawa Sake Brewery Great Brewhouse (石川酒造大蔵, Ishikawa Shuzō Ōkura) is the main brewing hall of a sake brewery in Sakuramachi, Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, built in 1916 (Taishō 5) and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on March 29, 2013. Its registration number is 24-0138, and it was renovated in 1946.
It fills the northern edge of the property. The Great Brewhouse is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri building with a gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) pantiled roof, measuring 32.8 metres by 14.6 metres and covering 566 square metres. At over 10 metres tall, it dwarfs everything else on the site.
The brewery's own website describes the Okura as a two-storey timber building in which the sake is brewed in calm, quiet surroundings. There is no real contradiction with the official clay-walled classification: dozo-zukuri means a timber frame buried under thick coats of clay. More than a decade after registration, the Ishikawa Sake Brewery Great Brewhouse is still where the mash is made.
Why It Was Registered
The Ishikawa Sake Brewery Great Brewhouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that its black weatherboarding, carried all the way up to the eaves, has made it a local landmark. Yokkaichi City's own summary of the 15 structures leads with it.
Brewing needs a large space with a steady temperature and room for rows of vats and tanks. A depth of 14.6 metres and a height above 10 metres are the dimensions that need produces. The courtyard Artesian Well also dates from 1916, which suggests the water supply and the brewing hall were upgraded together.
Boarding protects clay walls from rain. Most storehouses board only the lower wall; the Great Brewhouse is sheathed in black boards (Shitami-itabari) right up to the roof. It shows the brewery's black palette at its largest scale.
What to Look For
Mass is the point of the Ishikawa Sake Brewery Great Brewhouse. A black wall 32.8 metres long stretches across the north side of the property under a broad gable. Set against the one- and two-storey buildings around it, it makes clear how different its storey heights are.
The weatherboarding is laid in horizontal, slightly overlapping courses, each casting a thin line of shadow. From a distance the wall reads as solid black; up close you see those lines stacked evenly all the way to the eaves.
The Steaming House is attached to the south side. Steamed rice had to move straight into the mash, and the direct link between the two buildings is easy to read in the plan.
Visiting the Great Brewhouse
The Ishikawa Sake Brewery Great Brewhouse is a working brewhouse and the interior is not open. Its size, however, means the roof and upper walls can be seen from outside the property. Walk around the perimeter and watch the black wall rise behind the lower buildings in front.
