A Shopfront Facing the Street

Moritami Sake Brewery Store and Main House (森民酒造店店舗兼主屋, Moritami Shuzōten Tenpo-ken-shuoku) is a combined shop and dwelling of around 1883 in Iwadeyama, Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 17 November 2015.

It stands at the eastern edge of the brewery premises with its front turned to the street. The building is timber, single storey with part in 2 storeys, roofed in steel sheet, and covers 184 square metres. Its registration number is 04-0112.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to about 1883, the year the brewery was founded, and records alterations in the Taishō era, around 1955 and in 2009. Altered more than once, it has never stopped being the shop.

A Low Upper Floor and a Plaster Face

The type is tsushi-nikai: a townhouse with a deliberately low upper floor, so that from the street you see only a short band of wall above the ground-floor eaves.

The front is finished in shikkui lime plaster, with a projecting lattice at street level and plaster-framed windows above. The Agency singles out this facade as distinctive and credits it with shaping the streetscape, which is also the formal ground for the registration: contribution to the historic landscape.

Inside, the plan divides front from back. On the street side an earthen floor and a raised boarded floor form the mise, the sales room; behind it lie zashiki, formal tatami rooms for the family and their guests. The shop and the public face of the brewer's household share one roof.

Where the Compound Begins

The Store and Main House is also the hinge of the whole group. The kamaya, the rice-steaming house, joins it on the west, with the brewing storehouse beyond. From the back a corridor runs north to the Residence. Standing on the earthen floor, you are at the head of two sequences, one leading to the brewery and the other to the family's rooms.

The detail to study is the facade itself. The fine vertical bars of the lattice, the white plaster and the plaster window frames above all sit under one low line of eaves.

Repairs have come and gone, but this is the face the building has kept toward the street.

Visiting

Moritami Sake Brewery Store and Main House still trades as the brewery shop, so on business days you can step into the mise as a customer. The rear zashiki belong to the family's living quarters, and no public opening of them is advertised.

The whole front can be taken in from across the street. Because the building faces east, the plaster and lattice catch the light in the morning.

Ask the staff before photographing inside the shop. Directions and opening hours are on the Moritami Sake Brewery page.
