The Former Hirabayashi Family Residence (Ichiboshi-tei) South Gate (旧平林家住宅（一星亭）南門, Kyū Hirabayashi-ke Jūtaku Ichiboshi-tei Minamimon) is a late Edo-period timber gate-and-wall on the Hirabayashi family estate in Ikusaka Village, Nagano Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 5 December 2019. Its opening is 1.6 meters wide, and it has a Sodobei wing wall on each side.
It runs eastward from the southeast corner of the main house and closes off the south side of the estate. Gate and wall form a single structure four bays long.
The national database dates it to the late Edo period, 1751 to 1830, the same span as the main house, which places it among the older structures on the estate.
An Elegant Gate
The Former Hirabayashi Family Residence (Ichiboshi-tei) South Gate was registered as No. 20-0559 for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs points to its fine zelkova board doors and its windows of lattice set in quince-shaped frames, and calls it a gate-and-wall of refined, elegant character.
On the north side of the estate, the row of storehouses presents heavy walls to the old road. On the south, this gate is light and finely detailed. The estate uses weight on one side and delicacy on the other, and the gate completes that arrangement.
Bracket Arms and Zelkova Doors
The Former Hirabayashi Family Residence (Ichiboshi-tei) South Gate carries a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles, held up by Udeki, bracket arms projecting from the posts. It needs no heavy beams or back struts, which keeps the whole structure slender.
Of the four bays, the western of the two central bays is the entrance, 1.6 meters wide, fitted with board doors of zelkova (keyaki), a hard, handsomely grained wood prized for quality joinery.
The bays on either side of the entrance are finished in Shinkabe style, white Shikkui plaster set between exposed posts. High in these walls are windows: lattices fitted inside wooden frames cut in the Mokkō quince shape. The same quince outline appears on the storehouse doors and walls of the estate, repeated here on the gate.
