What the Tanaka Honke Museum Bathhouse Is
The Tanaka Honke Museum Bathhouse (田中本家博物館湯殿, yudono) is a small bathing pavilion built around 1895 beside the Reception Hall of the Tanaka merchant estate in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 19 September 2003.
Single-storey and timber-framed, it covers just 20 square metres, the smallest of the registered buildings on the estate. The roof is a hip-and-gable on an east-west ridge, laid in pantiles, with a lean-to Geya eave on the south side.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs believes it went up at the same time as the Reception Hall. It was part of the same arrangement for looking after guests.
Why the Bathhouse Was Registered
The Tanaka Honke Museum Bathhouse was registered as serving as a model of design. Small as it is, it has two rooms: the bath itself and a four-and-a-half-mat sitting room, with a narrow veranda along the south side. This was a bath for guests, with somewhere to rest afterwards.
The exterior is plain, with exposed posts in the Shinkabe manner, but the Agency points to the care taken in details such as the eaves lined with woven lath. The effort put into so modest a building is exactly what makes it worth a look.
What to Look For: The Eaves
Look up under the eaves. Thin strips laid in a woven pattern over the rafters show on the underside, giving the roof edge a light, delicate finish.
The hip-and-gable roof repeats the form of the Reception Hall next door. The two buildings differ enormously in size, but the shared roof tells you from outside that they belong together.
The south veranda is only half a bay wide, yet placed in front of the sitting room it gives a bather somewhere to cool off facing the garden. The design covers the whole ritual, not just the bath.
Visiting the Bathhouse
The Tanaka Honke Museum Bathhouse sits in a quiet corner east of the Reception Hall. After viewing the hall from the garden, walk round to the east and the small hipped roof comes into sight.
