What the Tanaka Honke Museum Front Gate Is

The Tanaka Honke Museum Front Gate (田中本家博物館表門) is a late Meiji-period timber gate on the west side of the Tanaka merchant estate in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, combining a gateway and a gatekeeper's lodge under one roof, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 19 September 2003.

It faces the street a little south of the middle of the west frontage, with the Gate Storehouse against it on the south and the Nishinokura storehouses on the north, so the three read as one continuous facade. The roof is a gable on a north-south ridge, laid in pantiles, and the frontage is 10 metres.

It is also the museum entrance, so every visitor passes through it.

Why the Front Gate Was Registered

The Tanaka Honke Museum Front Gate was registered as contributing to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes how well it sits with the storehouses on either side, and how it gives the street its character. A timber gate framed by white-walled kura was the public face of the house.

The plan is unusual. The southern half of the length is an open gateway of the Munamon type; the northern half is a gatekeeper's lodge with exposed-post Shinkabe walls. Putting gate and guardroom under a single ridge suits a large merchant house that needed to watch who came and went.

What to Look For: The Curved Beams

Stand in the gateway and look straight up. The Agency calls the framing distinctive: curved beams carry the ridge and the purlins. They are timbers used in their natural bend, and they give the structure a muscular look that straight members could not.

The lodge in the northern half has a different face from the open gateway, its posts showing in the walls. From across the street you can see the open half and the closed half side by side under the same roof.

A National Museum of Japanese History study describes the three storehouses to the left of the gate and lodge as stores for household goods; those are the Nishinokura, which continue the facade to the north.

Visiting the Front Gate

Because the Tanaka Honke Museum Front Gate is on the street, its exterior can be seen at any time from outside. For the whole frontage, gate and storehouses together, stand on the opposite side of the road.
